A black comedy for anyone who’s ever been lost in a foreign city, Metropole follows the adventures of Budai, a linguist travelling to a conference who boards the wrong plane and ends up in a foreign country where he can’t understand a word anyone says, and where language seems to operate on very unusual principles. Ferenc Karinthy’s greatest novel, at once an allegory for totalitarianism and an otherworldly Kafkaesque parable, appeared in Hungarian in 1970, but was only translated into English in 2008.
