David Hockney: A Life by Catherine Cusset
Despite its subtitle, Catherine Cusset’s David Hockney isn’t a biography. In fact, the first words on the first page are ‘This is a novel.’ But it is a strange sort of novel, taking the facts of Hockney’s life and giving them a fictive shape. At its heart is a compelling and frequently moving portrait of the artist, often at odds with the world but also always sure of himself and of the validity of his uniquely personal creative vision.
Catherine Cusset, born in Paris in 1963 and now a resident of Manhattan is the author of 13 novels, one of which, L’autre qu’on adorait, was a finalist for the 2016 Prix Goncourt. David Hockney was published by Gallimard in 2018, and this first UK edition comes with an endorsement from the great man himself.
