On the trail of the American Beats, Iain Sinclair makes a delirious and perhaps ill-fated expedition in the footsteps of Malcolm Lowry, Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs, Charles Olson and Gary Snyder. It is a journey in search of literary ghosts behind mirages of volcanoes and the Old West, in which rumours vie with false memories and unreliable reports to steer our guide from one strange adventure to another. It is an odyssey in which the beginning offers no clues as to where it may end.
This limited first edition of American Smoke (2013), in association with Hamish Hamilton, is numbered and signed by the author. The editions have been quarter bound in black Dubletta cloth and Carta da Zucchero paper sides and are housed in a blue suedel-lined slipcase, numbered 1 to 50. Each copy comes with a photographic postcard taken by the author during his West Coast research trip from Vancouver to Los Angeles, with handwritten text to verso, as well as a poster designed by Nathan Burton.
