I Served the Kind of England by Bohumil Hrabal

In Bohumil Hrabal’s I Served the King of England our narrator and hero, a hapless waiter named Dítě with little interest in politics, strives to make his way around a world that seems to care for nothing else. Although written in 1971, the book fell victim to the strict censorship that followed the suppression of the Prague Spring in 1968, and circulated only in samizdat form until its official publication in 1983. Set during the peri- od between the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia and the Communist takeover following the end of the war, the novel was described by James Wood in the LRB as ‘a joyful, picaresque story, which begins with Baron Munchausen-like adventures, and ends in tears and solitude.’
