Alan Burns, who died in 2013, was part of a loose group of experimental writers in the 1960s and 1970s which included B.S. Johnson, Christine Brooke-Rose, Ann Quin and Giles Gordon. Dreamerika!, his fourth novel and published in 1972, represents the high-watermark of his experimentalism, combining a surreal account of the rise and fall of the Kennedy dynasty, and the personal and global tragedies that accompanied it from beginning to end, with cut-out and pasted-in newspaper and magazine headlines and excerpts. As a devastating critique of the interconnectedness of money, politics, power and prestige, it has lost none of its relevance, nor its ability to provoke shock, outrage and thought.
