Slash and Burn by Claudia Hernández, translated by Julia Sanches
Strange and immersive, Claudia Hernández’s stream-of-consciousness novel unfolds in an unnamed country in a time of civil war. Neither characters nor places are named, although there’s never really much doubt that we are in the author’s native El Salvador during its savage decade of conflict in the 1980s and during its long, painful aftermath. It’s a story of war, bitterness, recrimination and reconciliation, but most of all it’s a story about mothers and their daughters, the choices that they make and that make them in return. Multi-layered, complex, told in overlapping voices, Slash and Burn is a sometimes challenging read, but a truly worthwhile one
