Malina
Ingeborg Bachmann, better known as a poet, wrote, towards the end of her short and troubled life just one novel, regarded by many as her masterpiece. Part detective story, part romance, part psychoanalytic case study, Malina is a spellbinding portrait of what it was to be a woman, and an artist, writing in the wake of the calamitous mid-twentieth century. Rachel Kushner writes in her introduction to this new edition ‘Bachmann – or her narrator, and it really does not matter which – did not shred, or hoard, but wrote, and sent, with the urgency of ‘today’.
